These organisations share a common characteristic: they chose to build platforms rather than optimise pipelines. The distinction matters because it determines whether engineering effort produces linear or exponential returns.
What Pipelines Do
A pipeline guides users or data through a fixed sequence of steps. Each step leads to the next. Users cannot skip ahead, mix components, or compose their own journey. The path is predetermined.
Consider a typical user onboarding pipeline:
